The "Viral Sockpuppets" is an online collaborative story-making game for YouTubers. The game re-imagines how linear character driven narratives are generally developed and allows for a level of interactivity never before experienced in the world of web-video. No longer does the creation of a good story need to be linearly based, formulaic and built around a singular plot. The Viral Sockpuppets creates a "Story-world" which YouTubers populate and create a new organically developed story from playing an "Exquisite Corpse-like" hybrid by iterating on each other's narrative ideas. Not only are the tools available within the YouTube community which allow for narrative to be develop by a gigantic collective consciousness, but the users within this community have a strong desire to create narrative and the technical skills necessary to iterate upon this new form of story-making.
The game begins when a singular narrative dilemma is posted online. The YouTube community is then invited to create multiple sub-plots that will seed the development of the story. Interaction with the game is then grouped into two categories; the active players who will create video response sub-plots for the narrative and the passive players who will vote on which sub-plot is selected for the next iteration. After an active player wins the public vote two times, they win the seat of protagonist, in which the current narrative will be resolved and a new one will begin featuring the winning player. In this way, the story-world of the game will never end, but sub-plots and narratives will continue forever, literally providing a "never ending story" for players and audience to enjoy.
